You can see all of the main sights in a day, but if you’re looking to party or relax by the beach you could stay for much longer. It’s possible to go as a day trip from London if you just want a quick visit.
How to get to Brighton
It’s about an hour by train from London. It’s also about half an hour by train from Gatwick airport, London’s second-biggest airport.
If you fancy going for a swim, chilling with friends, having a drink in the sun or all of the above then the beach is the place to go. It’s the city’s social hub and where everyone goes on a summer’s day. Don’t forget to visit one of the many chip shops on the seafront to get some traditional English fish and chips – just watch out for the seagulls!
This is one of the most impressive piers you’ll ever see. It stretches way out into the sea, not only giving a view along the length of the beach but also housing countless attractions including a rollercoaster at the far end. Head into the arcade and collect tokens from all of the different games to exchange for prizes – if you’re skilled enough you’ll leave with a giant teddy bear or something equally convenient to take with you on your travels.
If you’re able to drag yourself away from the beach you’ll find yourself wandering down the Lanes. These are full of cool shops, including loads of places to get bargain vintage clothes. If you’re looking to refresh your wardrobe with some unique items on a budget you’ll have a great time here. This is also the area where a lot of Brighton’s edgier bars are found, including one where you can even bring your own vinyl to play – you’re bound to find somewhere cool and exciting for a drink. Brighton is always a fantastic night out. There’s so many cool bars and pubs to choose from – whether you’re looking for a quiet pint, a unique and quirky bar or something frankly weird, you’ll be able to find what you’re looking for in Brighton. If you fancy staying out until sunrise then head to the seafront and find the club playing your kind of music.
Gay Pride Weekend in August is the biggest event in Brighton’s calendar and one of the biggest Pride events in the world. About half a million people flock to the city for a massive two-day festival featuring street parties, a parade and performances from huge names like Kylie Minogue, Britney Spears and the Pet Shop Boys.
If you’re in Brighton in early November you should definitely head to the neighbouring town of Lewes for their incredible and unique bonfire night celebrations. Featuring hundreds of people in costumes marching in the streets, political effigies the size of houses, firework displays and outrageous amounts of fire and explosives, this is guaranteed to be one of the most surreal nights you’ll ever experience.
