Arriving in Cologne you will be delivered directly to Germany’s top tourist attraction, stepping off the train into the Cathedral Square; at Christmas furnished by a marvellous Christmas market, but all year round guarded by the imposing Gothic spires of the Cathedral.

Getting there:
Cologne is linked to many major European cities by high speed trains including Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris and Luxembourg. You can also get to Frankfurt airport in one hour via high speed train.
Getting around:
Most of Cologne’s main attractions can be reached easily on foot, however the city also has a very good integrated transport system linking rail, bus and tram networks. You can buy day passes for these to get around within the city.
As Germany’s most visited tourist attraction, Cologne Cathedral is not to be missed. This gothic Cathedral is supposedly the home of the remains of the Three Kings. Thanks to these relics, the Cathedral was once one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in Europe. Climb the 533 steps to the top of the south tower. At 100m high, you’ll be rewarded with the best views across the Rhine.
The pastel pink facades and cobbled streets of Cologne’s Old Town make it a tourist favourite. Head to the Fish Market for those picture perfect pastel pink facades and relax with a beer at one of the many outdoor terraces. For a livelier atmosphere, check out Ehrenfeld. This quarter doesn’t quite have the grandeur of the old town but it draws in the crowds with its independent boutiques, quirky cafes and impressive street art. If you’re looking for a unique, local experience then this is the place to go. For a slightly more sophisticated stroll, wander through the Belgian Quarter. This is one of the trendiest areas of Cologne, famous for its fashionistas, hipster cafes and Belgian culinary delights.
Located in Cologne harbour, the chocolate museum hosts exhibitions detailing the history and culture of everyone’s favourite sweet treat. Step back in time and discover the story of the Mayans and the Aztecs before fast forwarding to the Baroque Age and industrialisation that gave rise to the chocolate factory. The museum makes its own chocolate and boasts an impressive chocolate fountain which is constantly flowing with Lindt chocolate. Don’t forget to visit the second floor to create your own chocolate bar from a range of 40 weird and wonderful ingredients.
Cologne zoo is the highlight of the region’s many parks and gardens. As one of the oldest zoos in Germany, it now has a collection of 10,000 animals, making it one of the most diverse zoos in Europe. The elephant park, home to 13 of the endangered animals, is one of the largest in Europe. The African River landscape is also a favourite among visitors and houses hippos, antelope and crocodiles.
