If you’re looking for a true getaway for rest and relaxation, Interlaken is for you. Think creative showcases, stunning views and film locations – it’s truly the place to clear your head and learn something new.

Nearest airport: Bern Airport, but you might find cheaper and more frequent flights from Geneva’s or Zurich’s airports
Main train/bus station(s): Interlaken Ost & West
Best time to visit? June – September for the warmest weather and activity availability. October is also great if you want to escape the crowds, but bear in mind that some adrenalin sports aren’t available around this time of year.

Best for: Scenery, Old Town/Small & Quaint, Romantic Escapes, Excursions/Day Trips.

How long should I go for?

We reckon you could easily spend 4 or 5 nights here, given that it’s not only a great city but also the perfect hub for taking day trips and thrill-seeking. If you’re short on time, though, 2 nights is enough to get a feel for the place!

Getting there

Nestled in the mountainous Bernese Oberland region of central Switzerland, Interlaken is within easy reach of the country’s other major hotspots, as well as just half a day away from the biggest cities in France, Germany and Italy

Top Attractions

Piz Gloria & the Schilthorn

Take the world’s longest cable car up to Piz Gloria, the ultimate in 007 filming locations, before making your way to the summit of Schilthorn. Be sure to catch a glimpse of dreamy Lauterbrunnen valley from here.

Harder Kulm

Take in stunning views of Interlaken and Unterseen’s alpine landscape. You can take the funicular to save yourself the walk, or hike it if you’re feeling up to the challenge!

Lauterbrunnen

Home to Staubbachfalle, this jaw-droppingly beautiful valley was the inspiration behind JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings – we can totally see why!

The Chocolate Train by Golden Pass

Technically, this isn’t in Interlaken, but it sure is easy to get to from here! Take a local train up to Montreux train station, where you’ll be greeted and boarded onto a scenic train ride through the mountains. Take in the gourmet cheese and chocolate delights on offer whilst learning the production process, before exploring the quaint cobbled town of Gruyere!
